Why Yellow Babies Can Happen?

This condition occurs because the Little One has excess bilirubin (yellow matter) in his blood. Newborns have high blood cell levels that trigger the production of bilirubin.Bilirubin itself is formed when old red blood cells are destroyed.

Actually the baby has had bilirubin since he was in the womb. But in the womb, your body secretes bilirubin for the baby through the placenta. After birth the baby cannot do it because the baby's liver is not fully developed. This inhibits the process of removing bilirubin which should be removed when urinating and defecating. This condition is called physiological jaundice. Your baby will start yellowing around 24 hours after birth and will worsen after four days, after which it will improve when it is around a week old.

However, although it is less common, yellow babies can also be caused by:

Sepsis in infants
Virus or bacterial infection
Internal bleeding
Liver damage
Deficiency of certain enzymes
Baby's red blood cells are abnormal so they are easily damaged
Rhesus incompatibility and blood type between mother and baby
There is a problem with the baby's digestive system
Babies at risk of developing jaundice include babies born prematurely (born before 37 weeks), babies born in bruised conditions and babies who have difficulty consuming breast milk.

If Bilirubin is too high

Levels of bilirubin that are too high in the blood of the little one can penetrate into the brain, damage brain cells and cause encephalopathy. This condition is called acute bilirubin encephalopathy.

The following are symptoms that might appear:

Fever
Gag
The ability to suck is bad
Sluggish
Difficult to wake up
Neck and body curved backwards
His skin is yellowed
Frequent fuss and anxiety
If your baby shows the signs above, immediately contact your doctor so that the Little one gets treatment as soon as possible and avoid permanent damage to the brain or kernicterus.

What can you do?

In addition to medical treatment with phototherapy, you can also prevent the increase in bilirubin by giving him enough intake. This intake can help the baby remove bilirubin in the body. You can breastfeed with breast milk 8 to 12 times in 24 hours. Or if you give formula milk, make sure you give it according to the time specified.Usually formula milk is given around 6 to 10 bottles in 24 hours.

You also need to pay more attention to it. Check the condition of the white part of the eyeball or the skin twice a day to see if it has returned to normal or worsened.

Yellow babies with certain disease conditions cannot be overcome by drying the baby in the sun. The best treatment can only be obtained at the hospital. If three days after birth the skin becomes more yellow, contact your doctor immediately.
