Mother, Know the Causes of Yellow Babies and their Management

Jaundice in infants generally occurs because the level of bilirubin in the blood of the child is too high. Although it is not dangerous, if it is not treated immediately, this condition can cause brain damage. For this reason, it is important for the mother to know the cause of the yellow baby and how to overcome it.

Jaundice or jaundice generally attacks newborns the first week after birth. Symptoms include yellowing of the skin and eyes, more intense urine color, even though the urine of the newborn should be colorless, even the stools can be paler colored. Bilirubin is a yellow substance that is produced when red blood cells are broken down. And generally newborns process red blood cells into higher bilirubin. Bilirubin moves in the bloodstream to the liver. The liver processes bilirubin so that it can be released by the body through feces. Because the liver in a newborn is not fully functioning like an adult, the inability of the liver to get rid of bilirubin maximally can trigger high levels of bilirubin and cause yellow babies.

Risk Factors and Causes of Yellow Babies that Mothers Need to Know

Most babies experience mild jaundice or physiological jaundice. Usually, this condition will improve within one to two or three weeks without causing problems.Along with the growth of the baby and the development of the functions of his organs, the baby will be able to process bilirubin better so that the physiological yellow will disappear by itself.

However, yellow in infants must be taken seriously. Because, if bilirubin levels remain high and untreated, jaundice can cause brain damage called kernicterus, a condition in which the baby's bilirubin levels are so high that they accumulate in the brain and cause interference, cerebral palsy, and deafness. If jaundice lasts more than three weeks, the possibility of jaundice is a symptom of another underlying condition.

Keep in mind, if yellow symptoms arise from a baby less than 24 hours old, the baby looks limp, less active, rarely or not even crying, less willing to drink, fever, and if there are certain risk factors that can cause the baby to yellow, often the condition is caused by certain diseases. If a yellow baby arises in this condition, then the baby needs to get proper examination and treatment. That's why the doctor will examine the baby at least every 8 to 12 hours before leaving the hospital, and a few days after being discharged from the hospital.

Babies who are at highest risk for developing jaundice include:

Babies born prematurely or babies born before 37 weeks' gestation.
Babies who do not get enough milk or formula milk (for babies who are not breastfed). This condition is because the little one has difficulty eating or because mother's milk is difficult to get out (brestfeeding jaundice). Sometimes the content of breast milk can affect the breakdown of bilirubin in infants so that the baby appears yellow. This condition usually occurs when the baby is 2-3 weeks old and is called breastmilk jaundice.

Babies with blood type are different from their mother's blood type. Babies whose blood type is incompatible with the mother's blood group or if the baby and mother are rhesus are different, they can develop excessive antibodies to destroy their own red blood cells and eventually increase bilirubin levels suddenly.
Other causes of yellow babies include:

Bruising at birth and bleeding under the scalp (cephalohematoma) caused by difficult labor.
Problems with the liver   or bile ducts, such as biliary atresia, cystic fibrosis, or hepatitis.
Infection at birth, such as rubella, syphilis, and others.
Low oxygen level (hypoxia).
Lack of enzymes.
Genetic abnormalities and abnormalities in the little red blood cells.
Certain drugs.

Right Handling For Yellow Babies

Babies will need treatment if the bilirubin level is too high or increases too quickly.Yellow babies need to consume lots of breast milk or formula milk. Here are some treatments for babies who experience mild jaundice:

Give milk to the baby as often as possible (between 8 to 12 times per day) to encourage frequent bowel movements. This helps remove bilirubin through feces. Even though it is rare, doctors can recommend administration of fluids through an IV.

The phototherapy method can help overcome yellow babies. Phototherapy is a common and very effective treatment method that uses light to help break down bilirubin in your baby's body. In phototherapy, your baby will be placed in a special bed under the blue spectrum and only wear special diapers and protective glasses.Phototherapy can be stopped every three or four hours so that the mother can breastfeed the baby, cradle and hug the baby so that he feels comfortable, or to check whether the baby is dehydrated. Phototherapy is very effective for treating yellow babies and with relatively few side effects, especially the appearance of a rash and darkening of the skin due to this procedure.

For very severe cases, blood transfusions may be needed if the baby does not respond to other treatment techniques. In a blood transfusion, a small amount of baby's blood will be taken. Then, the baby will receive a small amount of blood from a donor or blood bank. This will replace the damaged baby's blood with healthy red blood cells. It also increases the number of baby red blood cells and reduces bilirubin levels.

The handling of yellow babies in principle is to treat the underlying disease or condition. Most cases of jaundice in newborns do not require special care.Physiological mild or moderate jaundice (without underlying disease) will disappear usually after one to two weeks, because the baby's body can get rid of excess bilirubin by itself. However, contact your doctor immediately if your baby's jaundice doesn't go away. Especially if other symptoms appear in the baby such as fever, illness, difficulty feeding, the baby appears weak, and his body is getting yellow and darker.
